Godox DP Flashes vs SK Flashes
For photographers looking for a straightforward studio flash, you're a little spoiled for choice when picking from the Godox range! The DP and SK ranges have a lot of similarities, but what sets them apart from each other?
Introduced around 2023, both the SK and DP flashes work for a vast majority of photographers in a studio setting, thanks to their Bowens S-Type fittings, making them suitable for most modifier options, as well as their affordable price points, making them great for pros, as well as those just starting out.
Output Options
The SK Range consists of two flashes; the SK300IIV, as well as the SK400IIV.
With outputs of 300ws and 400ws, these flashes are great for portrait, food and product photography.

On the other hand, the DP Range has a wider selection, with the DP400IIIV, DP600IIIV, DP800IIIV, DP1000IIIV. Ranging from 400w, up to 1000ws, the DP Range is better suited to those looking to shoot action shots with the aim of freezing movement, for things like splash photography, dance photography and more!

Guide Number Rating
Comparing the 400ws version of each flash gives us an idea of the differences between the two units (see below for the full table comparison).
Despite having the same output, the SK400 has a 65m guide number, while the DP400 has a guide number of 87m, making it the more efficient and brighter option of the two.
Modelling Lamps
Both flashes also have different modelling lamp outputs. With a 30w modelling lamp, the DP are three times as powerful as the SK, giving a brighter continuous light for lighting testing. However, the SK has an adjustable brightness for the lamp between 5-100%, while no data has been recorded for the DP range model.
Flash Duration
The DP range also has a much wider flash duration range - adjustable from 1/800~1/2,000s across the board. While not suitable for super-fast action freezing, this does allow for more flexibility than the SK range, which only has a 1/2000~1/800s range.
Other Features
Both the SK and DP range flashes are manually adjustable only, without the option for TTL, and also without High Speed Sync options, though this does make both ranges suitable to pair with universal triggers without limiting use.
Both 400ws models also have similar size and weight data, though the higher-wattage DP flashes do in turn have slightly different weights and longer flash bodies.

RRP Price
Reflecting all of the above features, there is a slight difference in RRP between the two ranges. Comparing 400ws models, the SK400 sits at £165.00 RRP, while the DP400 RRP is £208.00. While not a huge difference between the two, the price difference does reflect the flexibility that the DP flashes offer over the SK models.
Which flash is best for me?
Pick the SK Range if you shoot in your home or in studio conditions, School, Portrait, Product and Pet Photography, with smaller setups in smaller spaces.
Pick the DP Range if you shoot in your home or in studio conditions for School and Group photos, Portrait, Furniture, or Pet Photography, and you want a higher flash output, to freeze more motion, or shoot with larger modifiers without losing too much power.
The higher output the flash, the larger you can go with your modifiers, for a wider spread of light, and softer lighting on your subject.
