Comparing the Godox V100 to the Godox AD100Pro II

Two similar flashes with different purposes and features - The Godox V100 Speedlite and the AD100Pro II have very similar power outputs and specifications, but can help you achieve different results. We're here to help you find out which one is best to choose for your own work.

Format and Use

The key difference between the two flashes is the format and controls.

An on-camera speedlight, the V100 can attach via hotshoe (or be used off-camera on a stand with an appropriate adapter). Allowing for on-axis lighting, the V100 is great for things like weddings and other events where you're not tied to a specific shooting location and where you constantly have to be on the move. It's equally great for street photography for this reason. It also comes with a detachable SU-1 fill flash attachment which is great if you need an extra pop of light directed towards your subject.

The AD100Pro II off-camera

In comparison, the AD100Pro II is a more compact, traditional off-camera monolight that is designed to be mounted to a stand. This makes it better for setups where you're shooting in one place, and also makes it a more suitable option for light modification with things like umbrellas or softboxes.

Controls

Another difference is in the controls. The AD100Pro II uses a standard display screen (now in full colour!) as well as button controls. In comparison, the V100 uses a small colour touchscreen on the back of the flash for easy controls and settings adjustments. While a small difference for some, this may also make a difference for anyone looking for something more intuitive and quick to shoot with.

Power & Output

Both flashes have a 100ws output, meaning they'll have a similar brightness, and both flashes are also compatible with TTL and HSS, as well as adjustments down to 1/1–1/256 power (9 stops),

Battery Life

Thanks to having similar outputs, and also with both having rechargeable batteries included, both flashes can handle a similar amount of flashes per full charge. While the V100 can handle around 400 flashes, the AD100Pro II (with it's slightly larger battery capacity) can reach up to 490 flashes per full charge.

Connection

The V100 speedlite also has the option to act as a master flash for Godox 24.GHz systems thanks to having direct-to-hotshoe contact.

The AD100Pro on the other hand is focused on off-camera control with a strong wireless range and compatibility with both the standard 2.4 GHz frequency as well as 433 MHz, which is great for larger venues or shooting in areas of high interference.

Groups

With 16 groups, (compared to the V100's 5 groups), the AD100Pro II can be identified with the new colour coded groups feature. This makes it great for adjusting settings on the fly, and makes the AD100Pro II better for fitting into an existing or growing monolight setup.

Mainly used on-camera, the V100 has less need for this kind of feature.

Modifier Fittings

Both flashes are Godox round-head designs, which mean they are compatible with round-head modifiers such as the AK-R1 kit, and silicone domes and the AK-R21 projector. Both are equally compatible with umbrellas and softboxes with speedlite fittings or adapters, though if using on-camera, the V100 is best used with super compact modifiers.

The Verdict?

For a quick, intuitive speedlight flash, choose the V100. It's great for on-the-go and best for shooting on-camera, but can be used off-camera with the right kit.

If you prefer shooting off-camera, the AD100Pro II will give you more flashes per charge and is better for fitting into a monolight setup thanks to it's colour-coded groups and umbrella mount.
