Comparing the Godox AD200Pro to the Profoto B10X Flash

The Profoto vs Godox flash debate has been a hot topic in the photography world for a while now, with photographers split between which is the best flash model and comparing specifications and prices. While the two flash brands both offer a lot in a small package, we're here to set the record straight and give you the rundown of each flash and it's technical specs so you can decide which one is best for you.

This blog specifically covers the Godox AD200Pro flash and it's counterpart, the Profoto B10X flash. Many of these points will also apply to the now discontinued PiXAPRO PIKA200Pro flash, as well as the older Profoto B10, however these are the currently available models.

Design

Both the B10X and the AD200Pro have LCD screens built into the back of the unit for easy reading and settings adjustments, and are both designed for portability and speedy shooting. As battery powered flashes, they're both cordless and therefore super handy to have on location or even just in the studio to avoid messy wires.

In terms of the flash head, the Profoto B10X uses an enclosed flash head design with a Profoto or Profoto OCF modifier fitting, so you can pair the flash with the Profoto modifier range. With a magnetic round head fitting as well, this makes the B10X compatible with the Profoto Clic range of magnetic mini modifiers to attach directly to the flash.

On the other hand, the AD200Pro has a range of different compatible heads that can be switched out as needed. This includes the supplied LED Fresnel Head and bare bulb head with detachable flash tube, as well as the additionally available H200R round-head fitting (compatible with round-head and magnetic modifiers!) and the EC200 extension head as well. Plus, the recently released R200 ring flash is designed specifically for use with the AD200Pro too.

Dimension and Weight

Both lights are relatively similar in dimensions, the differences stand out in their shape (with the B10X being cylindrical vs the AD200Pro being cuboid shaped. They also differ in weight, with the AD200Pro being only 590g excluding battery head, while the weight of the Profoto B10 is heavier at 1.5kg with stand adapter.

Both flashes also have removeable battery units to allow for off-unit charging and for swapping out batteries when you're on a long shoot.

Consistent Quality and Power

The Godox AD200Pro has a maximum power output of 200Ws with the same Guide Number at ISO100. The AD200Pro also has an improved recycle time when compared with it's predecessor at 0.01-1.8s. This short recycle time allows for shooting in quick succession high action images such as sports or dance (though, we'd advise looking for a higher output flash if you're looking to specialise in high-action shoots to ensure you've got enough power such as the AD600Pro).

At 250w, the B10X sits at a higher power output than the AD200Pro, and has 10 stops of power adjustment in comparison to 9 on the AD200. The B10X also has a shorter recycle time of as little as 0.05 to 1.3 sec making it the snappier choice for action shots.

Flash Duration

One of the most important factors when choosing the flash head is the short flash duration. This feature is important for capturing motion and action shots such as sports or dance as it helps to freeze the action and create a sharp image.

With the Fresnel Head attached, the AD200Pro provides flash durations of 1/220 to 1/15,380 seconds making it great for shooting high action images (though, we'd advise looking for a higher output flash if you're looking to specialise in high-action shoots to ensure you've got enough power such as the AD600Pro).

The faster the flash Duration, the more crisp your images will be as it reduces any motion or blur in your images. The Profoto B10X, on the other hand, has an action-stopping flash duration of just 1/7000 seconds, plus a super short flash duration at 1/50,000 seconds when using the Freeze Mode, meaning you can achieve sharper images.

Remote Control

The B10X uses Profoto AirX connection with a standard 2.4GHz receiver. You might be able to connect with other Profoto lights, transmitters and triggers such as the Connect Pro wireless transmitter. The B10X also has upgraded features including the Bluetooth connectivity function with the Profoto app!

While the AD200Pro doesn't have bluetooth compatibility (though some of the newer Godox trigger options such as the XProII do!) it does have a standard 2.4GHz receiver which communicates with any 2.4GHz Godox (and PiXAPRO) trigger thanks to the integrated X System for their triggering. Both models have easy connectivity and straightforward flash triggering.

Battery

The AD200Pros use the Lithium Battery Pack (14.4V/2900mAh). It delivers roughly 500 full-powered flashes per charge, which is ideal if you're on-site for an extended amount of time.

In comparison, the B10X also uses a lithium-ion battery, which can power 400 full-power flashes at a time and fully recharge in 60 minutes.

Comparison

Both flashes from Godox and Profoto are sufficiently compact and have very similar specs and functions, meaning it's likely that both lights will end up having very similar effects if used for your photography. While your decision may lie in the the best option to work with your existing modifier collection or brand preference, you can find a full specifications comparison below so you can check each important feature.

For many photographers, it may end up being the case that the price is what sways your decision due to the big difference between Profoto and Godox pricing. If you're a a beginner photographer or just getting into lighting, the Godox options may be more accessible for you! Either way, you won't be disappointed with the quality from either flash.
