The Formatt Hitech Soft Gold Filter contains gold flecks and offers the strongest effect among the Soft filters. It produces a vintage feel by smoothing skin, halting images, and adding a delicate warm tone. The subtle impact complements skin tones in all temperature settings and maintains contrast.
The 'digital' appearance of modern cameras can be effectively reduced using on-camera diffusion. Many Cinematographers prefer using a mild diffusion filter for its ability to enhance the skin tones of actors. For over 20 years, Formatt Hitech has been producing a variety of diffusion filters for professional use.
They have a significant advantage over using vintage optics in that they can be reliably repeated across cameras and lenses. They are also more versatile with modern lenses and the effect can be added instantly, but also removed, giving a filmmaker more flexibility. The wide range of density also allows for a Cinematographer to dial in just the right amount of effect on set.
Although certain effects can be applied during post-processing, this method is time-consuming and can be expensive. By using a filter, you can receive instant feedback and allow the Director and Cinematographer to seamlessly integrate the effect into the image. Furthermore, the filter naturally interacts with the existing lighting in a space, eliminating the need for complex adjustments and tracking nodes. This creates an organic and analogue representation of the lights within the scene.
