A little look behind the scenes with Chris Ord on a commercial shoot with some of the North East's Top Chefs.
The PIXAPRO CITI600 TTL (Godox Wistro AD600BM) is a revolutionary battery powered portable TTL monolight that features a self-contained rechargeable Battery, the High-Speed Studio Powerful Stroboscopic Flash that gives access to TTL metering which quickly provides you with the perfect exposure. It also has Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology to achieve short flash durations, as well as fast recycle times, which allows you to capture fast motion such as dancing, jumping and even water splashes with ease. With a built-in receiver and a variety of different modes from HSS to the multi burst, it is perfect for people who shoot weddings, portraits, events, fashion, sports and advertising. It is especially good for shooting on location due to the flash being easily portable.
The powerful 600Ws CITI600 TTL flash with a guide number of 87m has a 11.1V / 8700mAh rechargeable Lithium-ion battery pack giving approximately 500 full-powered shots per charge, perfect to keep you going throughout the shoot without the need for mains power. The CITI600 TTL gives you access to TTL automatic metering which will quickly provide you with perfect exposure without the need for manual metering, which could sometimes cause you to miss key moments.
Since the CITI600 TTL utilises Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology, it is capable producing short flash durations of between 1/220 second to 1/10,000 second for sharper images whilst maintaining colour accuracy throughout its power range which opens up a whole world of possibilities.
With an automatic temperature-controlled ventilation system to ensure it is safe and protected when shooting frequently, this means that the cooling fan will kick in to protect the flash when running at high temperatures.
The CITI600 TTL has a 600Ws flash tube that has an 9-stop power range (1/1 – 1/256 power) in 1/3rd stop power increments with super short recycling times between 0.01 and 2.5 seconds and 16 controllable groups and 32 different channels to provide maximum flexibility and control with your flash. It also includes a 10W LED modelling lamp which is equivalent to approximately100W tungsten but runs much cooler for longer usage time.
The CITI600 TTL’s user-friendly interface, with large Dot-Matrix LCD screen, enables you to quickly and easily change your flash settings with the use of large, easy to access buttons and a control dial. It features a variety of different flash modes including a High-Speed Sync mode (up to 1/8000 sec) to help overpower the sun, and a multi-flash mode, which can be set to between 2 and 100 flashes at a frequency between 1 and 100Hz (flashes per second), which allows you to create many different effects such as stroboscopic photography. It also features an intelligent slave cell (Pre-flash detector system) cell that can be set to ignore a Pre-Flash, which enables the use of the CITI600 TTL alongside speedlights or any other TTL strobe
The CITI600 TTL features a built-in 2.4GHz flash receiver, which allows it to be used in conjunction with the PIXAPRO 2.4GHz flash Triggers. This allows you to control your flash heads remotely such as flash power settings, Modelling lamp on/off, changing groups & channels and Triggering. It’s part of The ONE System, which you can mix and match any PIXAPRO range flash. The universal flash is compatible with popular camera brands from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Pentax with full control and even high-end cameras from Hasselblad, Leica and PhaseOne with basic control.
It uses an S-Type accessory mount, making it compatible with a wide range of accessories and modifiers. This compact and lightweight flash is perfect for people who shoot weddings, portraits, events, fashion, sports and advertising. It is especially good for shooting on location due to the flash being easily portable with automatic TTL metering.
The PIXAPRO® CITI600 TTL is a simple, easy-to-use battery powered unit which offers many features suitable for both amateur and professional photographers. Due to the battery power and TTL feature, it is the perfect light to give crisp sharp images whilst boasting super-fast recycle times and flash duration to capture motion for use in studio or on location.
This kit also comes with a padded Backpack, which enables you to carry both CITI600 TTL heads, along with accessories around with ease… Ideal for photographers that are always on the move.

Brilliant! Pun intended.
I bought two of the CITI 600 ttl heads a year ago at The Photography Show. I knew they would be good as they were strongly recommended by two highly respected friends. How right they were. They are well made, easy to handle and have so many advantages over older style studio heads. Having been a Bowens user for decades, I was pleased that my Bowens modifiers would all fit but that was just the start. Older heads just bashed out a pulse of light. You could adjust how much but that was it. These are genuinely TTL and will synch for HSS Flash. With the ST-IV trigger you can 'freeze' the TTL setting before moving the camera, which can be very useful.
Best of all, they are battery powered and have an optional remote cable so you can power the head with the battery pack on the floor or in a handy little bag, also available.
It is worth taking a little time to get to grips with the ins and outs of the flash head menu and the trigger menu. There is stuff to learn. You CAN just take them out of the box and get some use out of them but you will be missing out on a lot of functionality.
I have been so pleased with my two that I have nought a third and am lusting after more!
Very highly recommended. They are brilliant. Don't look straight at them on full power. OUCH!

With 600ws of flash on tap and a massive 8700mAh built in battery to power it, the PiXAPRO CITI600 sounds like a very capable flash head on paper. Throw in the potential for HSS and TTL if you’re a Canon or Nikon user and that unit is starting to sound very promising.
Jake Hicks explains everything you need to know about TTL as well as using it with the PIXAPRO CITI600 Flash Head, including images of some test shots.

Battery Powered Flash is possibly the most commonly used lighting, due to its versatility and the ability to be used on locations once believed too difficult for Photography. In this Blog, we take a look at three different battery powered flash unit, the PiXAPRO CITI600 TTL, PiXAPRO CITI600 PRO and Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL, to see how these three lights compare against each other and which would be the best option for you.
