ShadowCaster Gobos’ – A Product Shot (By Richard Bradbury)
Today I am back with another blog post using the ShadowCaster Gobos from Pixapro. For this post we will take a look at a shot of coloured wooden stones that I photographed.
The 55cm silver interior beauty dish is a high-quality modifier which provides a soft, gentle light source from your lights with a little more contrast compared to a softbox. The soft yet contrasting light is perfect for accentuating facial features and helps to pull each single detail available from your subject, all whilst giving a unique catch light in the eyes of your subject. With many different fittings available, the interchangeable dish simply attaches to the front of your flash, strobe or light. This is the ideal modifier to provide a unique, high drama look to your photos which make it great for shooting beauty, makeup, fashion or portrait still life photography.
This Dish attaches to the mount on the front of your flash and encapsulates the bulb to allow light to fall on the highly reflective silver interior. This Design Spreads the light evenly for maximum efficiency. As the interior is silver and therefore much more reflective, specular highlights of the subject are more pronounced and detailed, perfect for drawing out and accentuating facial features of your subject.
The deflector dish reflects the light back onto the interior silver surface on the beauty dish, helping to cover the entire interior evenly with light, to create a light that wraps around the subject. This means that the beauty dish is an ideal modifier for portrait photography as it helps to perfectly surround the subject in light.
Due to the shape of the Beauty Dish and the fact that the light bounces around the interior, it helps create a light with more contrast compared to using a Softbox. The silver interior of the beauty dish creates a cooler and more contrastinglight and look compared to the softer and more natural looking light created by its white counterpart.
The round shape of the beauty dish also helps to create pleasing catchlights in the eyes of the subject that replicates a natural light source such as the sun, making it ideal for beauty and portrait photography.
Included with the beauty dish is a diffuser cap, which simply slides over the outer edge, and this further helps to further soften the light being produced and to reduce any unwanted shadows on your subject. The extra diffusion will help the light fall more naturally onto your subject, ideal for beauty and portrait shots when you are trying to get the most accurate look from your subject.
The honeycomb grid clips onto the outer edge of the beauty dish which helps to narrow and better angle the light source, reducing any unwanted light spill and potential loss of light.
The beauty dish features a unique and revolutionary design feature which allows this to be used with a wide range of different flashes thanks to the interchangeable speedring. The compatible speedrings available for the beauty dish includes Bowens, Hensel, Elinchrom, Broncolor, Multiblitz and Profoto. (Please select your prefence in the dropdown box when purchasing). If you have a wide range of different brand flashes, you can simply purchase the necessary speedring to connect your softbox to the mount of your flash units, making this a cost effective and high-quality solution to any modifier requirements.
The high-quality aluminium construction of the beauty dish is strong and durable, helping to create a dependable modifier that will keep working well for the foreseeable future, ideal for studio-based photography. It requires no further construction or assembly as it simply attaches directly to the mount of your flash, reducing any unnecessary loss of time during your shoot.
The beauty dish is a high-quality and widely used modifier in the photography industry, helping to create a soft and gentle light source. The design helps to create a dramatic and unique lighting style without flaw, helping to create eye catching images for beauty, makeup fashion or portrait photography.

The example photos below were both taken with a 55cm beauty dish with the identical camera settings (ISO 100, f/11 1/125 second). The one on the left was taken with a Silver Beauty Dish, and the one on the right was taken with a White Beauty Dish. Notice how much brighter the highlights are on the left photograph compared to the one on the right.
As a general rule of thumb, smaller modifiers will produce a harsher light, and larger modifiers will produce a softer light. If you're going to be shooting mainly tight head shots, then you may be able to get away with a 42cm beauty dish, however the 55cm and the 70cm will give you more coverage.
